Each week, unassuming unbranded boxes land on the kitchen counters of families across Australia. What’s inside fills lunchboxes, supports nutritious meals and fights food insecurity.
The One Box delivers fruit, vegetables and bread to families in need through schools and community hubs. Aware of the growing struggle for many families to buy fresh produce, The One Box was founded in 2017 by The Fruit Box Group.
'The Fruit Box Group was eager to find a way to use its commercial infrastructure for a greater good. We knew there was more we could do,' said Martin Halphen, founder of The Fruit Box Group.
‘We’re now partnering with 120 primary schools across Australia. If you feed kids, there’s a better chance they’re going to learn more.’
'When kids arrive at school having had breakfast, they’re able to concentrate better. Having food in their lunchboxes means that students don’t feel shame for going without.'
For too many families, nutritious food is becoming an unaffordable luxury. More than 3.7 million households now experience moderate to severe food insecurity.
'Recently at a school, one of the boys received a banana and said it was the first time he had ever tried one, and he loved it. A lot of people don't realise how prevalent food insecurity is,' said Emily.
As a Community Partner of The One Box, it’s a cause we’re proud to support. 'We’re fortunate to have a great partnership with Bank First. Our values are really aligned and it’s all about supporting the community at a grassroots level,’ said Emily.
More than just food relief, The One Box supports wellbeing by reducing the stress and shame that often comes with food insecurity. Food relief is provided in a dignified way through plain boxes distributed at trusted school and community hubs.
'Most people who receive a box don’t actually know about The One Box, and that’s to ensure that nobody feels shame for receiving food relief. Everybody in Australia deserves to eat well,' said CEO of The Fruit Box Group and Secretary of The One Box, Brendan Shaw.
'We support approximately 2,500 families each week, providing 6-8kgs of fresh produce to those families through our school partnerships.’
‘Now that I don’t have to worry about buying bread and vegetables for my family, I am able to use the extra money to pay medical bills and take my children to the dentist.'
Independent evaluation by Monash Business School confirms improved dietary habits among recipients, with children snacking on fruit and eating more balanced meals. ‘We haven’t seen kids eat as healthily as they are now with The One Box,' said a School Coordinator.
The One Box strengthens community connections and even plays a vital role in the resettlement journey for refugee and newly arrived families.
With each box, The One Box is improving nutrition, easing financial stress and giving kids the opportunity to perform at their best in class.
