Meet the nurses turning global innovation into local action.
The Alfred Health Nursing Scholarship promotes nurse-led research, enabling emerging nurse leaders to embark on a study tour to observe innovative programs and the latest in best-practice care.
Congratulations to our 2024 recipients; Josephine Baker, Tania Birthisel, Felice Borghmans, Kellie Easton and Emma O’Donnel.
Josephine
Clinical Nurse Consultant – Neurology, Headache
Josephine will visit headache clinics in the UK to explore how nurse-led models could be implemented locally.
‘I’ve always been passionate about advanced care nurses leading clinics. To be able to see how this is done in the UK, where they have been doing this for much longer and are more experienced, will be fantastic.’
‘I was thrilled to receive this scholarship. I can now do something that I’ve dreamed of for a long time.’
Tania
Clinical Services Director – Intensive Care Program
As the Clinical Service Director for Intensive Care Services, Tania will visit leading ICUs internationally.
'I hope to gain valuable insights and alternative perspectives on operational efficiency, nursing leadership and to create relationships for future collaboration with other units across the globe.'
Felice
Manager – Clinical Services Design General
Felice will travel to the Netherlands to observe the Buurtzorg model, a distributed leadership model, as part of her research on self-management.
‘Nurses thrive on autonomy and feeling trusted to do their role. I want to learn about governance and how nurses can get the support they need in this model’.
‘I would love to pilot something similar. This scholarship is huge for me – I’m very grateful.’
Kellie
Clinical Nurse Consultant – Heart Failure
In heart failure clinics in the UK, Kellie will observe best practice techniques and the role of Clinical Nurse Consultants in specialist care.
‘The UK do advanced work in nursing; we want to lead and implement some of their programs at Alfred Health.’
‘I’m so excited to have this opportunity – I’ve known of these programs for years but haven’t had the opportunity to get there due to time and cost.’
Emma
Clinical Nurse Manager – General Medicine
Emma will research the use of virtual reality simulations, in the USA and regional Victoria, to train nurses on providing care outside the hospital.
‘We know that simulation has been effective in training clinical staff, but there seems to be a gap in simulating home environments.’
‘Homes are diverse and present unique challenges. If we can simulate environments reflective of real-life, we can equip nurses with the skills and confidence they need.’
