Jacob’s journey to teaching: Year three

When Jacob Bellingham enrolled at Monash University, he knew the path to teaching wouldn’t be without its challenges. We last caught up with Jacob in 2024, when he was balancing study and placement with four part-time jobs.

Now in his third year of study, the Bank First Indigenous Leaders Scholarship has given Jacob the time and space to prioritise learning and get the most from his placements.

‘Before receiving the scholarship, life was incredibly busy which made it difficult to stay motivated. With the financial security provided by the scholarship, I was able to reduce my workload. I feel less stressed and can now give my best,’ said Jacob.

Real-world experience at a local Primary School reinforced Jacob’s passion for teaching. ‘Placement was an incredible experience that gave me a new perspective and allowed me to apply what I’ve learnt to my own teaching,’ he says. ‘It enabled me to reflect and contribute ideas, which I’ve since been able to put to use in my studies.’

‘You never stop learning, especially as a teacher. Experiences like teaching placements are worth their weight in gold. They allow you to see, in real time, how teachers plan lessons and how students respond to teaching strategies.’

For many First Nations students, the costs of pursuing higher education can be a significant barrier.

Bank First’s contribution directly supports this mission, enabling Jacob to pursue his academic goals without the burden of financial constraints.’

Since receiving the Scholarship, Jacob’s results speak for themselves. ‘There were a couple of units where I initially lacked confidence. However, I achieved High Distinction grades which encouraged me to continue pushing beyond my comfort zone.’

Jacob was recently recognised with a Teaching Excellence Award in his role as a swim teacher, something he credits to the flexibility the scholarship has provided. Looking ahead, Jacob is eager to keep learning, growing and giving back.
