At Greater Shepparton Secondary College, you won’t always find the school’s Agriculture students in a classroom. Typically, they’re developing hands-on skills by caring for the school's sheep and chickens.
Proudly supported by Bank First's Teaching Initiatives Program (TIP), having livestock on school grounds allows agriculture students to take part in the Victorian Merino Wether Challenge and the Cows Create Careers programs.
'It’s been the best; students absolutely love going outside to interact with the animals. It brings a sense of calm when they’re working with the sheep, as they have to consider another being,' said Agriculture teacher Charlotte Drinnan.
'It’s a lovely experience to have the sheep here. We come and feed them and walk them around. It’s made class a lot more of an experience,' said student Declan.
Students are learning how to handle and care for the animals, while also studying sustainable production and land management. Having the animals on site brings the course to life – literally. 'Having the animals at school has made it so much easier. Working with them and seeing how they behave has made it more ‘real life’ than just on paper,' said student Rachael.
'It’s been very impactful on the students, they’re keen to come to class and attendance is really good,' said Charlotte.
The impact of the program extends beyond Agriculture students. 'Outside of the program, students who need to reset or have some time out of the classroom often come down to the garden too,' said Charlotte.
Bank First’s TIP grant provided water troughs for the sheep, making it easier for teachers to keep the flock hydrated outside of school hours.
While the livestock program is new, Greater Shepparton Secondary College has maintained its garden and 'Hen Hotel' for several years. The flourishing garden provides fresh herbs and vegetables while the chickens lay eggs, offering students a more comprehensive understanding of agriculture practices.
At this year’s Victorian Merino Wether Challenge, Greater Shepparton Secondary College placed 1st in the best presented group category and took home the state championship as overall winners.
Thanks to the dedication of teachers like Charlotte and Bank First’s TIP grant, Greater Shepparton Secondary College's Agriculture program is growing fast – and thriving.
For over 31 years, Bank First’s TIP Program has supported school initiatives with grassroots funding. We’re proud to have funded projects that add significant value to a school’s community.
