Bernie Lloyd - May 2018
I would like to welcome our newest Director, Simon Terry, to our Board. Simon’s expertise resides in financial services and digital technologies. He will introduce himself in our next edition of eSlate. As communicated last month we have a casual vacancy arising on the Board in August and subject to Member approval at the forthcoming general meeting on 17th May, we will welcome Judy Crowe onto the Board at that time. Judy is a very well-known and experienced educator who has been Principal of Heywood College, Warrnambool College and Melbourne Girls’ College and, during the last three years, has been president of the Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals (VASSP).
Bank First’s significant and longstanding relationship with Victorian education comes into close focus at the moment as schools across Victoria are applying for our Teaching Initiative Program (TIP) awards. Each year the Bank offers $30 000 to share amongst schools who value innovation and have fledgling programs that need a kick start which awards such as these provide. A program such as this can give life to inspirational concepts which add value to student experience and learning. All learning communities can apply, from Kindergartens through to Secondary Colleges, and Independent, Catholic and State schools are all in the mix. Usually we have over 100 applications and around 20 applicants are successful. We then offer our Members a chance to vote on their favourite from the 20 or so successful applicants and representatives from that school or learning community present their story at our AGM in November. Since inception 503 schools and pre-schools have shared $612,000 in TIP awards.
We also support the education community through various scholarships, contributions to charities and other awards as well as entering into memoranda of understanding with key educational partners. Farther afield we provide assistance to the Myanmar Teachers project which supports teachers living and working in disadvantaged communities.
Our values are clear and reflected in our support for education: we care; we learn and grow; we empower; we do it for the customer.
