Late in 2021 I had the pleasure of visiting Hamlyn Views School with one of our Relationship Officers, Sonali Suraweera.
It was a delight to visit such a beautiful and vibrant school, especially because school visits have been so limited due to coronavirus lockdowns. The school is only in its fourth year of operation but it was clear that the staff have worked hard to provide a welcoming environment for the students and families.
Despite it being the end of the school year where there is so much happening, I experienced a real sense of calm and joy as I was greeted at reception. The care and compassion of staff was evident in the way they farewelled the children at the conclusion to the school day.
The purpose of our visit was to present a Bank First Teaching Initiatives Award to the Principal, Suzanne Armstrong. We conduct this awards program annually to allow schools to develop an initiative to add value to the activities run for students. Hamlyn Views School will use the award to develop a Kitchen Garden and students will learn how to grow food and use it in cooking. Samantha Simpkin developed the program which also has a focus on communication and social skill development. Already the school has a Resource Smart team and students are taught to care for the environment.
It is your membership of Bank First that allows our Board to continue to contribute to schools such as Hamlyn Views where all students require a level of additional support due to their disabilities.
For fifty years our bank has provided financial services to those who work in educational settings. The staff I observed at Hamlyn Views School certainly deserve to have a bank that is invested in them.
