September Healthcare Hero - Jess

Each month, as part of the International Year of Health and Care Workers, we give people the chance, to nominate their healthcare hero to go in the running to win an eGift card each.

We caught up with our September winner, Jess, to talk about her career as a paediatric physiotherapist and working with patients through the rehabilitation process.

Healthcare Hero Jess

What’s your name and job?

Hi, I’m Jess and I’m a paediatric physiotherapist.

Tell us a little about what you do?

I work in paediatric rehabilitation and help children regain function after brain injuries, cancer treatment and other neurological conditions.

How long have you been working in your field?

I’ve worked in my field for 7 years.

Was this always your dream job? If not, what changed your mind?

Working in the physical rehabilitation field has always been my dream job, as I’ve had an appreciation for sport and physical mobility for as long as I can remember. When I first went into physio I thought I wanted to work in sports rehab, however, after a practical placement at the Children’s Hospital as a student, I’ve never wanted to work in any other field. It’s incredibly rewarding and humbling!

What do you love most about your job?

I love that I can help people and provide a positive influence when families are facing what’s often the biggest challenge of their life.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to get into the field?

If you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Work hard for what you want and don’t give up until you’ve achieved it. Physiotherapy is a tough degree, but it’s totally worth it!

What’s your wind-down routine after a shift?

Nothing beats a beach run!  …followed by a hearty meal!

What do you do in your spare time?

I love nature and the great outdoors! Nothing better than a bush hike amongst fresh air or paddle boarding down the river. I also love hanging out with my family.

Have you ever had a patient that has inspired you?

I’ve had so many patients that have inspired me. One that comes to mind is a teenager with a spinal cord injury. His dedication, motivation and positivity are truly incredible. I’m waiting to see him on TV at the Paralympics.

If you were a superhero, what would your power be?

Healing. I’d love to be able to cure all disease and injuries! That would be the dream!
