As part of the International Year of Health and Care Workers, we give people the chance, each month, to nominate their healthcare hero to go in the running to win an eGift card.
We caught up with our July winner, Jenna, to talk about what drove her to be a nurse and her advice for those looking to get into the field.
What’s your name and job?
My name is Jenna and I’m a Registered Nurse.
Tell us a little about what you do?
I work in a Southern Adelaide Metropolitan Hospital in the Paediatric Unit. I work with children of all ages from newborn to almost 18!
How long have you been working in your field?
I have been a Registered Nurse for almost 10 years and have been in the Paediatric Unit for almost 4 years and have loved every single minute!
Was this always your dream job? If not, what changed your mind?
I have wanted to be a paediatric nurse ever since my nephew was born, he spent a lot of time in hospital with Cystic Fibrosis. I did a student placement at a children’s hospital and thought oh no this isn’t for me - adults were easier to talk to.
After being a nurse for a few years, and then working in the paediatric emergency department, I knew that’s where I wanted to be and now I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!
What do you love most about your job?
I love working with children! I love looking after them and then seeing them all better and walking out the door! Oh and I love all the night shift newborn cuddles we sneak in and dress up days on the ward.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to get into the field?
Follow your heart. Experience different areas of nursing, find what you love and are passionate about! It makes going to work so much easier. Oh and learn to drink coffee, you will need it on night shift.
What’s your wind down routine after a shift?
After work I head straight for a hot shower then straight into my pjs (yes even at 4pm in the afternoon) and a big snuggle on the couch with the kids.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I’m also a freelance makeup artist at Jenna Kleinig Makeup Artist. I absolutely love it! And I love spending time with my 2 beautiful children and husband on the weekend going on big country drives and having adventures!
Have you ever had a patient that has inspired you?
I haven’t had just one patient inspire me, I’ve seen some terrible diagnoses of young children, and the way they handle that and their treatment is more than any strength I’ve seen in an adult. They truly are resilient and brave!
If you were a superhero, what would your power be?
My super power would definitely be to have healing powers! Heal a broken bone just by touch! How cool would that be?
Head to our Facebook page to nominate a healthcare hero you know! Each month we select a nominated healthcare hero to win a $100 gift card. As the person nominating, you’ll also receive a $100 gift card if selected.
